Hawaiian Airlines Cancellation Policy: What You Need to Know

Home » Blog » Hawaiian Airlines Cancellation Policy: What You Need to Know

With plans changing at a moment’s notice, Hawaiian Airlines understands that travel plans can change. Whether you’re canceling a flight because of an emergency or just an itinerary change, you must fully understand the Hawaiian Airlines cancellation policy to avoid excess fees and frustration. So here’s a full guide to help you through the process.

24-Hour Risk-Free Cancellation

Hawaiian Airlines has a 24-hour risk free cancellation policy for tickets that are booked directly through the airline (website, mobile app, or reservation center). However, if you cancel your reservation within 24 hours of booking and the departure is at least 7 days away, you can get a full refund, regardless of fare type.

Cancellation Policy by Fare Type

The rules around cancellations can vary based on the type of ticket you’ve bought:

1. Main Cabin Basic (Non-refundable)

Main Cabin Basic is the most restrictive fare type. These tickets cannot be changed or refunded. If you cancel, you’ll get no refund and no travel credit. Be certain of your travel plans before purchasing this type of fare.

2. Main Cabin, Extra Comfort, and First Class (Refundable & Non-refundable)

  • Non-refundable fares: You won’t receive a cash refund if you cancel a non-refundable ticket 24 hours after the booking date. But you will be given a travel credit, less any applicable cancellation fees, which can be used on future flights.
  • Refundable fares: If you booked a refundable ticket, you can cancel whenever you want and get a full refund back to your original form of payment

3. Award Tickets

You can cancel HawaiianMiles award tickets and miles will be redeposited in your account. You might be charged a small redeposit fee if you are not a HawaiianMiles elite member.

How to Cancel a Flight

You can cancel your flight in one of the following ways:

  • By phone through the Hawaiian Airlines website
  • Mobile App
  • Contact the Airline directly through their Customer Service
  • Flight Counter, though this is less frequent except if you are at the airport

Whenever you choose to cancel, always be sure to confirm the applicable fare conditions and cancellation terms for your reservation.

Travel Credit and Rebooking

If Hawaiian Airlines cancels your trip and offers you a travel credit, you can apply it to future Hawaiian Airlines flights. Travel credits are usually good for 1 year after the original date of issue. You must complete rebooking in that timeframe.

COVID-19 Flexibility

More flexible booking options: Hawaiian Airlines made the booking process more flexible during COVID-19. Many of these perks remain in place, including no change fees on most routes for Main Cabin, Extra Comfort and First Class fares. Because of this, fare differences may still apply on rebooking.

Important Tips

  • Be sure to read the fare rules before booking.
  • If you booked your trip through a third party (such as a travel agency or online travel site), you will have to have them cancel your trip directly.
  • Retain your cancellation confirmation, as well as any emails or receipts.

24-Hour Risk-Free Cancellation Policy

As with most all major U.S. carriers, Hawaiian Airlines has a 24-hour risk free cancellation policy. This enables travelers to cancel any flight within 24 hours from booking and receive a full refund, provided the booking was done at least 7 days before the departure date.

Key Points:

Cleared for all fare types including Main Cabin Basic

Must be booked directly with Hawaiian Airlines (website, app, or customer service)

Refund is done to the original mode of payment

No cancellation fees apply

Main Cabin Basic Tickets

Hawaiian Airlines’ cheapest but most restrictive ticket type, Main Cabin Basic fares come with the least flexibility. These tickets are also non-changeable and non-refundable after the initial 24-hour grace period, of course.

A Main Cabin Basic fare, if you cancel it after 24 hours, won’t earn you a refund or credit, unless your flight schedule is canceled or materially changed by Hawaiian Airlines.

The fares are ideal for travelers with fixed plans who have no use for flexibility.
